Blue waves behind the words Coast Colleges in dark blue

Weekly News Brief | August 27, 2021
From the Office of Chancellor John Weispfenning, Ph.D.

To begin, I thank everyone in the Coast District community for being part of the effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

We often cite your heroic work in moving thousands of courses online in a matter of days. You have managed the logistics of testing sites and vaccination clinics. Further, you have done everything you can to preserve student services, student programs, and the student experience against daunting odds.

As we welcome a new semester, we continue to face the disruption of COVID-19. The face-covering requirement for those indoors on district property has returned and we are holding at current levels of in-person presence for our offices and departments, as discussed in my message last week.

On Tuesday, the Coast District took another step in advancing public health when the Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a COVID-19 vaccination mandate for students, faculty, staff, managers, and trustees, with a to-be-developed testing program for those requiring exemptions. We will continue to keep you informed as protocols are developed.

I appreciate the comments that you have offered to these policies. Many were supportive, others critical, yet all are important to informing how we implement and communicate these requirements.

Best wishes to all for a successful Flex Day, Welcome Week, and semester ahead!

Be well,

 John

Each semester, Golden West College hosts the GWC Beach Hut during the first week of classes. The GWC Beach Hut provides all students with campus maps, department and program information, healthy snacks and water, activities, and more. GWC will also have faculty, staff, administrators, and student leaders serving on their "Street Team" to provide new and returning students with campus navigation and directional assistance. The GWC Beach Hut will be available to students from August 30 to September 2.
