Weekly News Brief | May 27, 2022
From the Office of Chancellor John Weispfenning, Ph.D.

There are many parts of our community, state, nation, and world where people are suffering great pain. Often all we see and hear from the outside world is pain, suffering, and loss. That can have serious consequences for our wellbeing.
We should never minimize the pain that surrounds us, yet pain is not the only condition of our world. There are great and small causes for hope and joy. Graduation, scholarship ceremonies, and faculty/staff appreciation events are among those moments of joy. We are celebrating the successes of thousands of lives and the work of those who made success possible.
Our causes for joy can be difficult to see because they have become routine. Coastline, Golden West, and Orange Coast have transformed lives and whole communities for decades. The fact that our powers of transformation have become expected foundations of our community should be another cause for celebration.
As we go into the Memorial Weekend, a time for somber reflection as well as connection with friends and family, please make space for thankfulness and joy. Those we have lost, those who laid their lives down in service, are honored when we make the world better.
For those returning for the summer, please enjoy the three-day weekend. For those returning in the Fall term, please enjoy your summer. And for those retiring or departing, thank you for being part of the great work of the Coast District.
Be well,
John
John Weispfenning, Ph.D.
Chancellor
Reminder
As announced on Tuesday, May 25, the requirement that masks/face coverings be worn and remain on while indoors has been extended until further notice. Masks may be removed in limited circumstances, e.g., eating and drinking. In those cases, care should be taken to maintain social distance, increase airflow, and move the activity outdoors if possible. Outdoor mask wearing is not required, yet should not be discouraged for anyone who is seeking additional protection. This extension applies to the masking requirements only.
