While we have made the most of virtual celebrations, it has been energizing to again have in-person commencements at Coastline College, Golden West College, and Orange Coast College. This is the first time all three colleges have held in-person ceremonies since the pandemic began. After attending the graduations at Golden West and Orange Coast, I am looking ahead to the Coastline commencement today to close out the 2021-22 academic year.
There is a pause when the energy of commencement and the academic year falls away. The quiet is momentary. Many are already doing the work of preparing for the first day of Summer semester. Others are taking the opportunity of relatively fewer students and faculty on campus to perform critical maintenance or implement new systems. And, of course, our advocacy, budget, and finance teams are working diligently to prepare for the new fiscal year.
This is an opportune moment to think about the future. We have spent the last two years addressing a series of external crises. Now, we have the chance to consider how we adapt instruction, student services, and operations to student needs going forward.
There is an adage that reflection is critical to learning. Regardless of the urgencies that still exist in your day, I hope that you are able to find time for reflection this next week. Your practice and the service we are able to provide our students will be better because of these quiet moments.
Be well,
John

Reminder
As announced on Tuesday, May 25, the requirement that masks/face coverings be worn and remain on while indoors has been extended until further notice. Masks may be removed in limited circumstances, e.g., eating and drinking. In those cases, care should be taken to maintain social distance, increase airflow, and move the activity outdoors if possible. Outdoor mask wearing is not required, yet should not be discouraged for anyone who is seeking additional protection. This extension applies to the masking requirements only.

COASTLINE COLLEGE |
Today, Friday, June 3, at 6 p.m., Coastline College's 46th commencement ceremony will be held for the first time on campus at the new Student Services Center, a building that is scheduled to open this Summer. The ceremony will also be streamed on the Coastline YouTube Channel for the 80 percent of Coastline students who are remote graduates. Coastline will recognize the accomplishments of 1,048 graduates receiving 2,012 degrees and certificate for the 2021-2022 academic year. A total of 238 students will graduate with honors and 39 students as valedictorians. This will be the first 'Hybrid Commencement' for Coastline College.
GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE |
Golden West College was excited to host their first on-campus employee gathering in over two years at their Staff and Faculty Appreciation Barbeque this past week. Celebrating another successful academic year, and those that made it happen, over 150 employees enjoyed a barbequed feast while honoring retirees, Teacher of the Year, Part Time Faculty of the Year, Employees of the Month and Year, Manager of the Year, and Peace Award recipients.

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE |
Orange Coast College's architecture department won the grand prize and an honorable mention for two entries in this year's Design Village competition at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The annual competition invites student competitors from California universities and community colleges to design and build "shelters" which they inhabit throughout the entirety of the weekend. OCC's architecture department took 11 students grouped into two teams, with professors Joseph Sarafian, AIA, and Steve Fuchs each guiding a team. The theme of the competition was "Eternal," giving students an open-ended project brief to design a structure that transcends time and space.
