Blue waves behind the words Coast Colleges in dark blue

Weekly News Brief | July 29, 2022
From the Office of Chancellor John Weispfenning, Ph.D.

This past Monday, Golden West College alumnus Eloy Ortiz Oakley participated in his last Board of Governors meeting as Chancellor of the California Community Colleges. Chancellor Oakley served during a consequential time in our system's history, both in tackling issues of equity and weathering the COVID-19 public health crisis. I wish Eloy the best in his leadership of the College Futures Foundation and continued success wherever his career takes him.

Change is a necessary part of every district and college. We recently said goodbye to Trustee David Grant and Vice Chancellor Andy Dunn. Their successors, Trustee Elizabeth Dorn Parker and Vice Chancellor Marlene Drinkwine, are already hard at work for our students, faculty, and staff. I am grateful to welcome Trustee Parker in her new role and welcome Vice Chancellor Drinkwine to the District.

Soon, I will join Trustee Grant and Vice Chancellor Dunn in retirement. Yet another change that proves that the mission of the Coast District is bigger than any one person. Still, we all contribute in our unique way to our shared purpose – improving the lives of our students and better serving our communities.

Be well,

 John

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

Orange Coast College is a leader in smoke and tobacco-free policy according to the California Youth Advocacy Network. OCC received an A+ grade, outperforming a B average grade in CYAN's Region 8 which includes Orange County and parts of Los Angeles County. OCC transitioned to a smoke-free campus in June 2020 after many months of discussion and planning by OCC's Smoke/Tobacco-Free Task Force, which was made up of representatives from all of the College's constituency groups. The effort was led by students.
