Blue waves behind the words Coast Colleges in dark blue

Weekly News Brief | August 12, 2022
From the Office of Chancellor John Weispfenning, Ph.D.

In last week's message, I shared news from the Board of Trustees meeting related to student debt forgiveness. At that same meeting, the Board heard an important update on AB 705 (2017). This legislation made a major change in how we place entering students in English and math, with a strong push towards transfer-level courses.

There is a common pattern across the colleges. A greater percentage of our student cohorts are completing transfer-level English and math in their first year. For Coastline, since 2017, that figure has nearly doubled in both English and math. Golden West and Orange Coast also saw significant increases.

Does this mean our work is done? No. We know that disparities by race and ethnicity persist and were made worse by the pandemic. Part of the next challenge is to match higher enrollment percentages with more equitable course success rates on par or higher than in the past. That will mean a strong focus on enhanced support, both within the courses and in the services surrounding the student.

English and math are gateways to higher education, and in absence of proficiency serve as a barrier. It is our shared responsibility to give every student an opportunity to succeed in courses that move them towards their educational goal in a timely way.

Be well,

 John
