Weekly News Brief | November 4, 2022
From the Office of Chancellor Whitney Yamamura, Ed.D.

Both yesterday and today, I've joined President Suarez and President Rodriguez, as well as students, classified professionals, faculty, and administrators from the Coast District, at the California Community Colleges Organización de Latina/o/x Empowerment, Guidance, and Advocacy for Success (COLEGAS) Annual Conference in Long Beach.
If we intend to close student equity gaps, then research has shown that faculty, staff, management, and executive representation matters. At COLEGAS there's a strong focus on nurturing and encouraging Latina/o/x professionals in education to take on increasing leadership roles. Diversity is one of California's and Orange County's greatest strengths. Our colleges are better when we embrace that diversity and reflect the communities we serve.
Allyship also matters, and I'm grateful to have an opportunity to support the work of COLEGAS. It's a truth of the human condition that we can only fully know our own experience. Still, we're enriched when we seek to understand the experiences of others. Further, it's our responsibility to amplify voices that have been silenced and elevate those whose rights have been trampled upon.
Few things are as meaningful to our students and early professionals as seeing an example of someone who looks like them, speaks like them, or walked their journey and who now is standing in front of them as an acknowledged authority. Representation and allyship serve as beacons of possibility. We in the Coast District are called to shine that light.
With gratitude,
Whitney
Whitney Yamamura, Ed.D.

Report from the Board of Trustees
|
 |
On Wednesday, November 2, the Board of Trustees met and heard a report from Chancellor Yamamura on 2022-23 Goals for the District. The report included progress toward the goals of moving beyond the pandemic, advancing student success and equity, maintaining fiscal integrity, stabilizing enrollments, strengthening relationships with employees, students, and community, and leveraging educational technology. Among the highlights were a return to in-person/hybrid classes and services, six new programs approved to date in fall 2022, 32 new career technical education programs under development, and Coastline's milestone as the first community college in California to receive accreditation approval for the Competency Based Education Program. The Colleges and District Office were reported to be at various stages of DEIA planning, building from the substantive work of previous years.
Trustees held a first reading of various Board Policies and Administrative Procedures, including a proposed telecommuting policy and revision to the reserves policy. The Board adopted a schedule of meetings for 2023, noting that the first meeting in April will be held on a Tuesday due to religious holiday observed on that Wednesday. The Board noted that the student trustee had resigned, and a search will commence in the new year. Trustees also noted and encouraged participation in next week's election.
The Board adjourned in memory of VerLyn "Sonny" Jensen, attorney, philanthropist, and friend of the district; Barbara Moss, friend of higher education; and Frances Munoz, the first Latina trial judge in California.
