Weekly News Brief | January 27, 2023
From the Office of Chancellor Whitney Yamamura, Ed.D.

The Friday before the first day of a new semester often feels like the calm before the storm. A great deal of work has already occurred to pave the way for our new students, and many are working furiously to get final pieces in place. We will be ready when the students return in full force, with all the energy and enthusiasm they bring.

This semester we continue on the path towards normal, however "normal" is to be defined. Our enrollments appear to be on a gentle incline. Students are returning to more in-person classes, alongside online and distance options. College life is finding new vitality on campus and in digital spaces. We find ourselves, for good and bad, in interesting times.

Times of transition offer us a unique power to shape what is to follow. It is our focus on students and community that will show us the right path and guide us through the storms.

With gratitude,

 Whitney

GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE

Golden West College welcomed students from the Los Amigos High School Early College Academy who visited the counseling department this week to begin discussions about transfer options. The students, who are juniors, are on track to complete 60 units (a complete Associate Degree) by the time they complete high school. The 60 high school students are interested in transferring to four-year colleges with two years of college coursework completed in various STEM fields, such as biology and engineering. This is the first Early College Academy cohort; two more cohorts are in process as freshmen and sophomores this year.

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

Painter Linda White presents work in a solo exhibition on display at Orange Coast College's Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion from January 30 until March 23. The exhibition, titled "Linda White: Four Decades of Painting from Geometry to Gesture," is a survey exhibition of paintings, drawings, and prints from 1972 to 2020 by Linda White, who lives and works in Newport Beach, CA. The exhibition demonstrates White's artistic engagement with abstraction and representation, showing her inspiration from East Coast landscapes to Pacific Coast seascapes, all the while maintaining her abiding interest in bold colors. The exhibition will be on view during Women's History Month in March, along with a concurrent exhibition at The Doyle: "Ann Phong: Re-Evaluating Normal."
