Blue waves behind the words Coast Colleges in dark blue

Weekly News Brief | April 14, 2023
From the Office of Chancellor Whitney Yamamura, Ed.D.

Chancellor Yamamura in front of the District Office

In the last few weeks, I've met with several community leaders, including representatives from the NAACP, OC Black Chamber, CalAsian Chamber, the Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance, and Hispanic 100 – as well as a variety of community, business, educational, and political leaders. I also represent the Coast District as vice president for the statewide Asian American Pacific Islander Trustees and Administrators Caucus. In fact, we have several colleagues representing us on numerous regional, statewide, and national organizations covering diverse communities and interests.

Sometimes even people in the community who think they know us well are surprised when they learn a bit more. It's impossible to predict the right series of introductions that will open a door for student career placement or create an opportunity for a faculty member to enrich the classroom experience. The offerings of Coastline College, Golden West College, and Orange Coast College are deeply aligned with the needs of our region and beyond. Our excellent programs serve to create richer and more vibrant communities. We are the engines of social prosperity and agents of generational transformation.

I am fortunate, and thankful, to be your ambassador in the community. I also appreciate every person who serves as a representative for our work. You are all diplomats for the cause of education.

With gratitude,

 Whitney
