Blue waves behind the words Coast Colleges in dark blue

Weekly News Brief | April 21, 2023
From the Office of Chancellor Whitney Yamamura, Ed.D.

Chancellor Yamamura in front of the District Office

This Wednesday's Board meeting, I had the solemn responsibility to ask for an adjournment in the name of a Coastline student, Faye Eccles; a Golden West staff member, Ronda Rogers; a community leader, Jean Watt; and a former trustee, Worth Keene. Each of these individuals left their mark on the Coast District and indeed it was moving to hear the remembrances offered from the dais.

We speak of colleges and districts as if they are things with an independent identity. What we learn in solemn moments is that institutional "identity" emerges from those who choose to join our community, be it for a few months or a few decades. Each person who moves on leaves a bit of their identity with us. Each person here with us today is affected, and hopefully inspired, by this shared identity.

When we think of the legacy of the College or District, is it the name or is it the impact we have on people's lives? To me it is always the people – past, present, and future. That is the source of our common purpose and shared mission. And through this shared identity, we honor the memories of those who lead the way.

With gratitude,

 Whitney

In a special session on Monday, April 17, the Board of Trustees convened a biennial districtwide Ethics Training Workshop conducted by General Counsel Jack Lipton.

On Wednesday, April 19, the Board of Trustees met and recognized the retirement of Laurie Camody, the Division/Area Office Coordinator for Arts & Letters at Golden West College, expressing their appreciation for her 39 years of service to the Coast District.

The Trustees heard a presentation by Orange Coast College's Steve Tamanaha, Dean of Student Success & Support and Maricela Sandoval, Student Equity Manager, highlighting the Pirates' Cove Basic Needs Center. The on-campus pantry opened in 2017, expanding in 2018 to offer a wider selection of food as well as other basic needs. In 2022-2023, Pirates' Cove moved to an enlarged campus space, providing students with an array of basic needs resources. The pantry portion of Pirates' Cove now includes dry goods, fresh foods, and frozen items. Students with a Coast District ID can access the pantry twice a week for groceries and daily for grab and go snacks. The new space includes an area where qualified students can enroll in Cal Fresh and connect with employment, shelter and homelessness resources. Additionally, through a partnership with the Orange Coast College Foundation, students are linked with physical and mental health resources, and through hardship grants, can obtain monetary help with utility bills, textbook costs, and transportation support. The Closet is another innovation at Pirates' Cove, developed in partnership with the Fashion and Art Design departments, where students can select age-appropriate professional clothing and cold weather essentials. Since relocating in January, Pirates' Cove has served a daily average of 840 students and distributed over 100,000 pounds of food. The Trustees commended the Pirates' Cove and Orange Coast College for their commitment to providing this essential student support and for the College's leadership in addressing food insecurity.

Diana Carey, of the Measure M Citizens' Oversight Committee presented the Trustees with the committee's FY21-22 Annual Report. She shared her view that the Coast District has met and exceeded the expectations of the citizens who supported Measure M. On behalf of the committee, she expressed gratitude to the Board of Trustees for their vision, foresight, and stewardship of the Measure M funds.

The Board adjourned in memory of Jean Watt, esteemed community leader and environmental activist; Ronda Rogers, Golden West College staff member in the Regional Testing Center; Worth Keene, former Coast Community College District trustee; and Faye Eccles, student of Coastline College.
