Blue waves behind the words Coast Colleges in dark blue

Weekly News Brief | May 12, 2023

For Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I would ask that each of us consider the nuance hidden in the AAPI label. That is, we should acknowledge that a group with heritage tracking back to 75 countries will have different experiences connected to cultural identity. If we add the immigrant experience, first, second, and third generations of the same family have very different perspectives of life in the United States.

My family has proven that point. Earlier generations faced the exploitation of migrant labor followed by the injustice of internment. My parents found their path to the middle class through education. My journey brought me to leadership in an educational system. These are hard purchased gains, and I honor those who forged this path for me.

My experience is not the experience of all AAPI students, faculty, and staff. Many communities with high rates of immigration continue to face exploitation and injustice. It is not enough to understand the "average" AAPI experience. Our understanding should be immediately relevant to the communities we serve. We need to distinguish the needs of groups within groups, and of individuals within each group.

To be manageable, information is often collected and aggregated to tell a story. For this AAPI month, let's seek to individualize our students' and colleagues' stories. There is great beauty in that nuance.

With gratitude,

 Whitney
