Blue waves behind the words Coast Colleges in dark blue

Weekly News Brief | August 25, 2023
From the Office of Chancellor Whitney Yamamura, Ed.D.

Chancellor Yamamura in front of the District Office

Yesterday, the District held our yearly Summer Picnic, and today is Flex Day at all three colleges. These are in keeping with our traditions just before the start of a new academic year. Among the vast offerings today, there are opportunities to address family matters, strengthen health and wellness, build skills as educators and leaders, and continue the work of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism, and Accessibility. I hope everyone is having an informative and engaging day, mixed with camaraderie and reconnection.

The beginning of the new school year brings an end to our summer of relative quiet. It is my hope that you had a good summer away or took the time to take some vacation and recharge for the mission ahead. Every year a student is with us, they deserve our very best. Ensuring that we rest is part of the equation in achieving our best.

Community colleges are the place where the day-to-day for our careers happen, this can include those same conflicts, headaches, and monotonies that happen in any workplace. As we give those things their proper space for resolution, we also get to share in the transformation of lives and the changing of generational trajectories. That, to me, makes this workplace special.

Have a happy Flex Day.

With gratitude,

 Whitney

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

Orange Coast College's "STEM Academy" program has been named a recipient of the 2023 INSIGHT Into Diversity Inspiring Programs in STEM award. The OCC "STEM Academy" serves as an academic support program that connects students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to the resources and tools they need to succeed in STEM courses offered at the college. Honorees of this national recognition were chosen from colleges and universities for their efforts to make a difference in the lives of underrepresented groups and support their important work through mentoring and teaching in the STEM fields. As one of 80 recipients, the OCC STEM Academy will be featured in the September 2023 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.

Orange Coast College played host to NASA's Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) Robotics competition. This 4-day engineering design challenge brought students together from OCC and Chula Vista's Southwestern College who had completed two online events (Mission 1 and Mission 2) earlier this year. A little over 40 students were invited to participate in the on campus event Wednesday, August 16 to Saturday, August 19.
