Blue waves behind the words Coast Colleges in dark blue

Chancellor Yamamura in front of the District Office

In March, we celebrate Women's History Month.

It struck me on Monday, during our Cabinet meeting, the strong representation of women in Coast District leadership. Two of three college presidents are women, alongside our two current vice chancellors, and senior leaders of Information Technology Services, Human Resources, and District Office Operations. We see this among our trustees as well, with three of five elected seats held by women.

We know representation is important. It is not so long ago, a time still remembered by many, when staff and faculty positions were nearly split in half between women and men – yet leadership roles were two-thirds men or more. Some senior jobs had only ever been held by men. That patriarchal system was broken only through the hard work of women who persevered and challenged discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. In fact, Title IX's 52-year legacy owes part of its origin to women here in the Coast District.

Today, Coast District women continue to be at the forefront in inspiring the next generation of leaders. Golden West College President Meridith Randall and Vice Presidents Kay Nguyen and Claudia Lee recently held a panel session for aspiring leaders. President Angelica Suarez and Vice Chancellor Andreea Serban have an upcoming panel with Cal Poly Pomona President Coley on navigating careers with power and resilience.

As we consider the role gender still plays in the workplace, including for those who identify outside the binary, there remains a need to do better. To continue the change that began decades ago. We in the Coast District are fortunate to have powerful examples.

With gratitude,

Dr. Whitney Yamamura
Chancellor

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

The Orange Coast College Theatre Department will debut its production of "Born Yesterday" on March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Drama Lab Theatre. OCC theater arts instructor Bethany Kraemer will direct this romantic comedy that flirts with the humorous side of American politics. The play, written by Garson Kanin, premiered on Broadway in 1946 and later adapted to film in 1950. Assistant Stage Manager and OCC theater student Corvin Wolf is proud of the theater family that has brought this production to life. "Everyone worked together and made each other's lives easier. Acting and technical, everyone teaches each other," Wolf said. "What makes a show is the people, and these people are really good."
