Yesterday we commemorated the remarkable achievements of the 2024 graduating class from Golden West College, Orange Coast College's ceremony is tonight, and Coastline's is next Friday. These momentous occasions are not only a celebration of the students' hard work and dedication but also a testament to the unwavering support and commitment of our entire Coast community.

To our esteemed faculty members, I extend my deepest appreciation for your tireless efforts in guiding and inspiring our students throughout their academic journey. Your passion for teaching, your dedication to excellence, and your commitment to nurturing the minds of our students have undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping their futures. Your impact transcends the classroom, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those you have had the privilege to teach.

To the staff and managers whose enthusiasm and hard work behind the scenes have been instrumental in ensuring the success of our students, your efforts have not gone unnoticed. From enrollment and financial aid services to administrative support and facility maintenance, each of you has contributed in your own unique way to the holistic development and well-being of our students. It is because of your unwavering support that our students have been able to thrive and achieve their goals.

As we gather to celebrate the accomplishments of our students, let us take a moment to reflect on the collective effort and collaboration that have brought us to this point. Together, we have created an environment where students are empowered to pursue their dreams, overcome obstacles, and reach their full potential. The success of our graduates is a testament to the strength of our Coast community and the values that unite us.

Persistent Innovation

Submitted by John Taylor, Orange Coast College Dean of Library and Learning Support

The accessibility review of our Canvas courses in Fall 2023 was a great example of District-wide collaboration and innovation. The learning support teams across all three campuses worked for more than 5 years to implement the first broad assessment of ADA compliance in our Canvas courses. The Canvas district workgroup, comprised of faculty, managers and classified professionals spent many hours evaluating software, designing a system, and debriefing the process after the first fall semester 2023 implementation. The team is working to continuously improve our approach so we have an ongoing process to evaluate Canvas courses for accessibility for all our students. This is a great example of what we can achieve working together.

Please send examples of persistent innovation, by which I mean having a good idea and then putting in the hard work to make that vision a reality. The more examples submitted, the better I can highlight your successes in future letters and in the community!

Changes to MyCoast

We are excited to announce the upcoming launch of the modern and personalized MyCoast dashboard on June 3, 2024, after 5:00 pm. This updated version aims to provide a seamless, intuitive, card-based interface, making it easier for users to access essential information and perform critical business functions within our colleges.

Over the past four months, our Information Technology Services teams have diligently worked on a single presentation layer connecting to the Ellucian ecosystem and other daily-use technologies. Rest assured, we will continuously enhance the portal with new tools and features as we integrate new applications, ensuring its adaptability and relevance.

College News

COASTLINE COLLEGE

Coastline College recently hosted its inaugural Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Practices Symposium (CRPP) Symposium. With over 50 faculty and administrators in attendance, the hybrid in-person and virtual event was held at the Student Services Center in Fountain Valley. Funding for this event was made possible by the CRPP Innovative Best Practices Grant, a competitive, one-time grant to aid in the development of innovative Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)-minded and culturally competent training for faculty.

The CRPP Symposium, which was formed for the purpose of advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the college, featured six distinguished faculty members from Coastline College: Dr. Deborah Henry, Professor Kelly Ruppert, Dr. Petra Petry, Dr. Tanya Hoerer, Professor Oceana Callum, and Dr. Matt Quinlan. Through the Faculty Equity Course and the Deeper Roots Series, these esteemed educators delved into strategies to implement equity-minded practices and foster inclusive spaces within their classrooms. Their shared strategies focused specifically on nurturing the development of culturally responsive pedagogy and classroom practices for disproportionately impacted and underrepresented communities.

GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE

On May 2, GWC hosted a Transfer Reception and Signing Day to celebrate transfer students' milestone achievements.

Students who will be transferring in Fall 2024 received a Certificate of Transfer Achievement from President Meridith Randall and a transfer cord to wear at graduation. Attendees also enjoyed lunch as well as prizes and GWC merchandise raffles. During the event, students were given the opportunity to speak with transfer representatives from four-year universities, including CSU Dominguez Hills, CSU Fullerton, and UC Irvine for any help or questions regarding the next steps in their transfer journeys.

After meeting with four-year representatives, students were invited to take photos with campus leaders, Goldie and Tuffy the Titan from CSU Fullerton.

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

The Coast Community College District Board of Trustees signed a partnership between Orange Coast College and the United States Coast Guard on Wednesday, May 15, to develop a recruitment pathway and a Direct Enlistment Lateral Entry Program. This program will pave the way for OCC graduates to embark on rewarding careers with a higher starting pay salary and greater responsibility. OCC's partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard signifies a significant step forward in bridging the gap between education and career readiness.

OCC students who complete an associate degree in the Professional Mariner Program (Boatswain's Mate) or an associate degree in Culinary Arts (Culinary Specialist) will be eligible for direct enlistment in the Coast Guard as a Petty Officer Third Class (E-4) or Petty Officer Second Class (E-5), based on final determination by the Coast Guard. Through this partnership, the Coast Guard can develop qualified personnel through OCC programs. Students enrolling from OCC will have their coursework pre-approved by the Coast Guard, allowing them to enter at a higher pay grade.

One of the key highlights of this partnership is the promise of greater responsibility and a higher starting pay salary for OCC students who choose to pursue careers in the Coast Guard. By recognizing the value of education and skills acquired through OCC's programs, the Coast Guard is demonstrating its commitment to attracting top talent and rewarding dedication to service.
