As we come to the end of the academic year, I want to extend heartfelt appreciation and my warmest congratulations to the 46 retirees of the 2023-2024 academic year within the Coast Community College District.
These individuals, 11 faculty, 31 classified professionals and four managers, have collectively dedicated over 1,200 years of their lives to supporting our students and enriching our community. Their commitment to our institution is truly commendable, and their impact on the lives of our students will be felt for generations to come.
With an average of 26 years of service per employee, each retiree has left an indelible mark on the Coast Community College District. Their dedication and loyalty have added to the foundational work of their predecessors to shape our colleges into the esteemed educational institutions they are today. As we bid farewell to our esteemed colleagues, let us take a moment to honor their remarkable contributions and celebrate the legacies they leave behind.
To our faculty not working during the summer months, I encourage you to take this time to relax and rejuvenate, enjoying well-deserved moments of rest. For those teaching and the classified professionals and managers who will be working through the summer, please remember to prioritize self-care and take time away from the office to recharge.
Thank you all for your continued dedication to the Coast Community College District and the students it serves. Wishing you all a safe and rejuvenating summer.
With gratitude,
Dr. Whitney Yamamura Chancellor

Changes to MyCoast
|
We are excited to announce the upcoming launch of the modern and personalized MyCoast dashboard on June 3, 2024, after 5:00 pm. This updated version aims to provide a seamless, intuitive, card-based interface, making it easier for users to access essential information and perform critical business functions within our colleges.
Over the past four months, our Information Technology Services teams have diligently worked on a single presentation layer connecting to the Ellucian ecosystem and other daily-use technologies. Rest assured, we will continuously enhance the portal with new tools and features as we integrate new applications, ensuring its adaptability and relevance.

COASTLINE COLLEGE |
This year, of the 53 Early College High School (ECHS) graduating seniors, 30 graduates earned the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) and 23 obtained 39 Associate Degrees, setting a record high. The Class of 2024 at ECHS averaged 46 Coastline units, reflecting an increased completion of university-level general education courses and associate degrees.
ECHS's track record for academic excellence extends back to its founding in 2006. In Spring 2023, it became the first school in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to receive the Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School of Excellence Award. During that year, 21 out of 52 graduates achieved the IGETC, and 15 earned 27 Associate Degrees from Coastline. The faculty composition at ECHS has also evolved, currently made up of five full-time and seven part-time instructors. Initially, faculty teaching there consisted solely of part-timers.
Coastline College currently serves over 1,600 high school students across California. Since 2020-21, student numbers and enrollments at Coastline have consistently grown. This trend means many high schoolers are graduating with over two years' worth of college credits by the end of high school, with many graduating at this year's Coastline College Commencement just days after graduating from their respective high school.
Among these students, 695 are from a partnership with four local entities: ECHS, Garden Grove Unified School District, Huntington Beach Union High School District, and Newport-Mesa Unified School District. These partnerships offer 48 sections covering Career Technical Education and General Education courses, either fully asynchronous or in-person at high schools, exclusively for high schoolers. Success rates from these partnerships average an impressive 83% over four years.
Additionally, students engaging in Coastline's concurrent enrollment, attending courses alongside the general public, achieve an average success rate of 81%. This high school population contributes 363 of Coastline's FTES.

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE |
On May 24, Orange Coast College named civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez as the College's 2024 inductee into the Alumni Hall of Fame. Sylvia Mendez played an instrumental role in the groundbreaking Mendez v. Westminster case. This case, which was a triumph against racial segregation in California schools, was a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights. Mendez v. Westminster successfully ended de jure segregation in California, setting a precedent for the nation. The case was named after Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, Sylvia Mendez's parents, who were at the forefront of the battle for equal education.
