Coast Community College District Trustee David A. Grant will retire from the Board of Trustees effective July 8, 2022. Notification of Trustee Grant's decision was provided to the Board and to the Orange County Superintendent of Schools on Monday, May 9.
"Dave stands among the Coast District's most influential leaders and greatest champions," said Coast District Board President Mary Hornbuckle. "In knowing Dave, we have all been fortunate friends and colleagues of someone who exemplifies a lifetime of leadership through service."
From the age of eight, Trustee Grant grew up in Newport Beach and began his time with the Coast District as a student athlete on the crew team at Orange Coast College in 1956. He transferred to UCLA to complete his bachelor's degree – with a year spent at the University of Stockholm. Grant completed his master's degree at California State University, Long Beach.
Trustee Grant returned to OCC in 1963 for what was planned to be a short-term faculty appointment. The role instead turned into the first step in a career that would see him serve as Associate Dean of Students, Crew Coach, Dean of Students, Director of Marine Programs, and ultimately President. Grant retired from the presidency in 1995, remaining active as a volunteer leader for the OCC Foundation before deciding to run for the office of Trustee of the Coast District – serving Coastline College, Golden West College, and OCC.
"There is power in finding the community where you belong and then trying to make it even better," Trustee Grant said. "There is joy in knowing that the Coast District is well positioned to shape the lives of students for generations to follow, and we as a District and as a Board helped make that possible."
Trustee Grant represents Trustee Area 5, including the City of Newport Beach where he is a resident. The Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday, May 18, to consider next steps in identifying a replacement.
