On Saturday, this region's worst mass shooting in recent memory occurred in Monterey Park coinciding with the opening of Lunar New Year festivities. A time of celebration, renewal, and focus on family and community turned to a time of fear and grieving. My heart goes out to all those affected, including the many in the Coast District who have connections to the Monterey Park community.
Without knowing the motives of the perpetrator, the consequences of mass violence in a predominately Asian community – particularly Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants and their descendants – has a dimension of perpetuating inequities and injustice. All of us are called to rally around Monterey Park and our neighbors sharing in acute loss and pain.
